Are you are here because Self Portraits are intriguing to you, and perhaps even slightly intimidating, but you’re into getting deeper? Are you here because you are just curious to know more about how I do things and make the art that I make? Are you already exploring your inner world via seeing yourself through visual images, and want to deepen your practice?

I am so thrilled that you are choosing to spend some time with me, and allowing me to offer you some guidance in this chapter of your journey!

During this series, I will be going through the main elements that make up the core of my sessions. I skim through them, in a simple/beginner type way. I’m giving you a gentle taste of how I roll; what my process is like. I went a step further and pulled 4 of my most pivotal images/sessions from the last few years, and studied them for you! And because I love you all, I also included a short BTS sneaky cheeky peek from my most recent shoot “39”.

Deeper and juicier in-person exploration will be available (to be announced), for those of you who crave this alchemizing practice and self inquiry.

Self Portraits, and Portraits (by an artist who has embodied this practice) that are created in ceremony, can be used as a way to externalize an internal narrative, bring forth future self potentials, hidden or forgotten selves, work through traumas that need tending, bringing to light realities that you are experiencing (and more…). This practice can be a very potent, healing and revealing visual art medicine, to propel you into embodied transformation.

Let’s dive in!

In this first lesson, I will be discussing how I gather my inspiration to get up, push through resistance and create out of nothing.

This next lesson is where I’ll talk about equipment and gear. I’m very minimalist. That doesn’t mean that you need to be as well, but just that all that “fluff” can sometimes be excuses to not do the work, or a distraction from where you should really be digging in deeper.

Light light light…it’s all that really matters. Kidding, but not. It’s everything. It my opinion, it can make or break an image; it’s what makes you stop in your tracks, or keep on scrolling. An artist’s choice of light also reveals so much about them, where they create from and how they look at the world.

To pose of not to pose…Do I ritualize everything I touch, yeah kinda. You are art, you’re already creativity, so it’s all there. You just need to find a way IN, and learn to access it whenever you want, and stay there.

Image Study

The first image is called Wild Woman. This photograph was taken in 2015 and was published and shared in online blogs and websites several times. It was published in print in the Lemonade and Lenses magazine, as well as Click magazine. It was selected as a finalist in the Self Portrait category, for the 2016 Click Voice Collection.

The next image is No One is Coming, and the words that came to me while editing this photograph.

No One is Coming

2017

“Firstborns carry the weight of our falling and our rising, as mothers and as woman, I believe that they knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they chose to unite with our souls. He is sensitive and creative and expressive and bold; everything that I had lost, I found through intermittent bursts of self-recognition, by simply allowing him to be.

Motherhood is a healing portal. It holds our darkest shadows, pits of fire and repressed rage…but to feel the dark so deeply carries the power to open the heart to newfound levels of beauty, wisdom and love. Love for ourselves, acceptance of ourselves.”

This is the Bath Series. This was my very first experience with the ability to channel during my self portrait sessions.

39 is my last shoot of 2021. My last incarnation of the year…the form after the skin has shed.

Behind The Scene Footage

This cheeky (my bum is aimed at the video camera for most of it…you’re totally welcome ;P) BTS video is from my latest Ceremonial Self Portrait Session in February 2022. I made my way to a friend’s breathtaking land on the south shore of Nova Scotia, where I thought I would have the ocean singing to me whispers of inspiration as I danced barefoot on the rocks, bathing in the salty ether of creation. Instead, what I got was raging waters crashing on the rocks so loud that I didn’t even attempt to have my music on. Icy sharp winds that sent my head for a spin so fast that I lost the awareness of the technology required to pull this off, and a gorgeously blinding sun to add beauty of course, but also to prevent me from seeing anything, at all, on the technology equipment.

This is part one of the footage; it begins as I am surrendering to the fact that I have no music, I am freezing, I won’t see much and I feel intoxicated from the energy of the Elements. Surrendering to the fact that I need none of the things I think I need. Eventually I stopped feeling the cold. I was out on the waters for a total of 1 hour and 30 minutes, I think. I began in ceremony, with cacao and incense. The energy so wild that I could barely sit still, so I began to set up the equipment, and couldn’t get any of it right, for a while. This footage ends about half way through the shooting portion of my entire session.
